Question for my fellow bloggers

April 27, 2010

Have any of you out there transitioned a free wordpress blog (like this one) to your own domain?  If so, how’d that process go?  Did it affect your readership at all?  I ask because I’ve been thinking about moving over to our own domain so that I can make some of the cooler toys I develop (like the series sim) downloadable, or even a web-app.

It’s a piece of cake to migrate to your own domain. Just export from here, and then import that file to your new installation.

Can’t say how it affected my readership, as I never really had one in the first place. 🙂

      Thanks Jeff.

Does wordpress.com allow you to use 301 redirects? If so, that solves most of the readership problem — maybe just RSS to worry about? (Although, if you’re using something like feedburner, maybe you can change the input source without changing what the reader gets out?)

I’d suggest transitioning sooner rather than later (before you get HUGE), if you have a good reason to move at all.

Thanks Sky. I’ll have to research the 301 redirects.

Don’t think we’ll get HUGE until Erik is allowed to watch Cardinal games again 🙂 But yeah I’d prefer to do it sooner rather than later either way. Eh, I have a reason (being able to hang programs I write out there for download and maybe having some interactive Cards pitch F/x stuff) don’t know if they’re good reasons or not.
